In 2016, I started writing a Camino memoir provisionally entitled Stumbling into Wellness. Three years later, after substantial revisions, I stopped writing what had become The Weird Way – for the best of reasons.
After delivering a standing-room-only speech at the Annual Gathering of American Pilgrims on the Camino™ in March 2019 on the topic of coaching and the Camino, I followed my instinct, trusted my creative process, and wrote Wisdom Along The Way. I realised that my passion, as both an author and a coach, is the transformation that ensues when we change our relationship with ourselves.
That’s the most important relationship of our life. If you doubt that, consider the next sentence.
It’s the only relationship we’ll be having 24/7 for as long as we’re on planet Earth.
If we don’t pay attention, that sentence can become a life sentence. Yet some of us, including me for most of my life, don’t even realise that it exists – or that it could be different.
Look inside
The sub-title of Wisdom Along The Way is:
Twelve True-Life Camino Tales with an Inspiring Twist
…and that describes the content exactly. The book relates 12 of my Camino (mis)adventures in the context of a different coaching principle each time. It tells the remarkable story of how – despite the limitations of a life-long neurological condition – I walked into a healthier, more compassionate relationship with myself, first in baby steps, and then in bigger and bolder strides.
Your path may be completely different to mine. But I’ve written about mine because I want to share the simple truth that, like me, you too can clamber out of your comfort zone and create a fuller and more meaningful life for yourself.

Reader reviews
A wonderful, unique Camino book – unlike any other I’ve read. Highly recommended!
– Lydia B Smith, Producer/Director, ‘Walking the Camino’
The unique hallmark of this book is the way Elaine draws out the lessons of the Camino, which, if we all applied them to our lives, would make the world immeasurably better.
– Johnnie Walker, Camino guidebook guru
We spend so much time preparing for the Camino logistically and physically, but hardly any (if any at all) preparing ourselves emotionally and mentally. This book fills that chasm beautifully. It’s an important addition to the Camino literature.
– Roni Jackson-Kerr, academic and pilgrim
